Shazam is a Very Confusing Word

Shazam confusion

If a specific superhero says ‘Shazam’, it will certainly bring some massive changes. But what if you say Shazam! Will people around you understand at once what you want to mean?

I don’t think so. At least I won’t be able to reckon which Shazam you are bringing up. Let’s see how many Shazam you can indicate.

Shazam is a movie name

Shazam! is a 2019 superhero comedy film based on the DC Comics. After being abandoned at a fair, Billy constantly searches for his mother. His life, however, takes a huge turn when he inherits superpowers from a powerful wizard. This is how the story aheads. With a 7/10 IMDb rating and 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, this film achieves favorable reviews. This movie is really good and was entertaining for me to watch.

Shazam is a wizard

Wizard Shazam

The name ‘Shazam’ originally belonged to an ancient wizard, who lived in the Rock of Eternity and guarded the Seven Deadly Sins.

Wizard Shazam granted the superhero Shazam (formerly Captain Marvel) his name and powers. The wizard named Shazam actually has a history stretching back thousands of years. In his original Golden Age incarnation, he was portrayed as an ancient Egyptian who fought against evil for centuries. When he was too old to continue, he passed along part of his power to young Billy Batson, who transforms into a superhero when he shouts Shazam’s name. Although the wizard Shazam has passed on, Billy can summon his ghost for brief periods of time in the Rock of Eternity. He continues to give Billy guidance.

Shazam

Billy Batson began using the name Shazam as his alias instead of Captain Marvel.

NB: Why is Captain Marvel now called Shazam?

Because the actual title ‘Captain Marvel’ was now under trademark by Marvel Comics, DC couldn’t simply publish their hero’s stories under his own name, so they improvised. Drawing a name from both the wizard that gave Captain Marvel his powers and the magic word he speaks to become a hero, DC began using ‘Shazam!’

Shazam is a family name

The Shazam Family is a group of the mightiest mortals led by Shazam (Billy Batson). Its members, each receiving one aspect of Shazam’s power, are his foster siblings. You may hear the name of Lady Shazam, Shazam Jr. etc.

Shazam is the magic word for Shazam

Wizard Shazam bestowed powers on the child Billy Batson. Batson simply had to speak the wizard’s name, and he would transform into the adult Captain Marvel.

Shazam is the magic word for Black Adam too

Teth-Adam also says “shazam!” to power up.

‘Shazam’ is the acronym for 6 Gods (for Shazam)

Shazam derives his powers from mythological figures: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. Look carefully. The first letter of these Gods’ name forms the word Shazam!

‘Shazam’ is the acronym for 6 Gods (for Black Adam too)

Black Adam draws his powers from the Egyptian gods: Shu, Heru, Amon, Zehuti, Aton, and Mehen.

So, what do you think? Next time, if anyone says the word ‘Shazam’, don’t hesitate to ask which Shazam he/she is referring to.
