The Firefly Poem Where The Crawdads Sing

Where the Crawdads Sing is a 2022 American mystery thriller romantic drama film based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Delia Owens.

In the movie, following Kya’s death, Tate uncovers Chase’s missing shell necklace and poems written by Kya in their home on the Marsh. The poem is titled ‘The Firefly’.

The full text of The Firefly is below.

The Firefly

Luring him was as easy
As flashing valentines.
But like a lady firefly
They hid a secret call to die.

A final touch,
Unfinished;
The last step, a trap.
Down, down he falls,
His eyes still holding mine
Until they see another world.

I saw them change.
First a question,
Then an answer,
Finally an end. And love itself passing
To whatever it was before it began. A.H.

Meaning of the poem

Some female insects do eat their mates. Fireflies, in fact, have two different light signals. One for mating, and one to attract a male in order to make him her next meal.

This is very related to the death of Chase Andrews.
