Crimson Sunbird Using Banana Flower Petal as Bathtub

Tiny Bird Using Banana Flower Petal as Bathtub

A Crimson Sunbird female refreshing herself with the water which is stored in the petal of an ornamental banana flower as if nature creates a floral bathtub for her.

This is a fairytale-like scene captured by photographer Rahul Singh. He has photographed the wildlife around his home in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India.

Last August, he captured these mesmerizing photos of a bird bathing in a petal that left netizens stunned.

“I visited a place where there were bushes of these ornamental bananas to take photos of sunbirds sucking nectar from it. Everything was going as usual when, suddenly, I was shocked that the crimson sunbird started taking a bath in the water stored in the banana flower petal,” Rahul Singh said.

Singh was so happy to be at the right place at the right time. “This is really a once in a lifetime moment,” Rahul said. “It is amazing how nature can surprise us.”

Crimson Sunbirds primarily feed on nectar, but actively hunt for insects while raising their young. They are resident breeders in southern Asia – India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Indonesia. They are seen in both forests and gardens.

Rahul posted the photos on his Instagram, captioning: “A Crimson Sunbird female refreshing herself with the water which is stored in the petal of an ornamental banana flower as if nature creates a floral bath tub for her.”

You might be thinking that banana flowers always hang down, so how could these images be true!

Well, you mightn’t have seen them all! There are a lot of banana flowers, those are upward. Let’s see one:

These images have fascinated many and perhaps encouraged them to get out and explore nature better as it did for me.
